Job Hunt Checklist

Finding a good job after college is all about preparation. While you’re in college, it’s best to begin preparing for your job hunt one year before graduating. The sooner you begin to prepare, the better chance you will have of finding a great job right after college. Take the steps to make your job hunt organized and stress free by making a clear plan for starting your job hunt in a competitive job market.

Career Center: Take advantage of the career center on your college campus. Even as an online degree student, most accreditted colleges have virtual career centers. The career center is filled with resources to help you find the best career fit. You will also be able to find opportunities for volunteering and networking, as well as resume building and interviewing support.

Interning and Volunteering: Interning and volunteering are two great ways to get a jumpstart on your job search. By getting out there and working in the field you plan on starting a career in you gain valuable experience and great resume builders. You can also look at volunteering and interning as networking opportunities, and a chance to meet the right people who can connect you to great career opportunities. So much of finding a great job is about being in the right place at the right time, so consider every volunteer task or internship the chance to find a great job.

Documentation: Always be prepared with proper documentation. A year before graduating you should have a polished and updated resume. If you are not sure how to begin writing your resume, talk to the advisors at your career center. You should also begin gathering letters of recommendation. Ask several professors and employers for letters attesting to your work ethic, reliability, and drive to succeed. By giving people time to write recommendation letters, you will have a variety of appropriate letters to choose from. Keep all copies of your resume and letters in a neatly organized folder or binder for safekeeping. These documents will come in handy when you are ready to start your job search.

Start a successful job search with preparation and organization. Take advantage of the resources available to you. Getting a jumpstart on your job hunt while you’re in college will ensure you get on the right path to a great career.
